Community Gathers for Fire Prevention Week with Focus on Lithium-Ion Battery Safety |
The Grand Blanc City Fire Department recently welcomed residents to its annual open house, marking the culmination of Fire Prevention Week with the theme "Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home."
During the event, Lt./Fire Marshal Christopher Cates distributed fire safety materials, emphasizing the importance of proper handling and storage of lithium-ion batteries to prevent potential hazards.
Residents had the opportunity to sign up for smoke alarm installations, a service provided by the department to enhance home safety.
As a certified car seat technician, Cates also offered guidance on correct car seat installation and provided replacement seats in emergencies.
The open house featured a variety of activities, including popcorn and hot dogs, children's games, and the chance for kids to try on firefighting gear.
Additionally, the department gave away coloring books and kiddie helmets, much to the delight of young attendees like Addie Jones.
In light of recent events, the Grand Blanc Township Fire Department postponed their open house, originally scheduled for September 28.
The event will now coincide with the grand opening of the new fire station on Dort Highway in the spring.
This new facility is part of a $24 million project that also includes a Department of Public Works building, aiming to enhance the township's emergency response capabilities.
According to Township Supervisor Scott Bennett, the project has been in the works for years and will not require additional taxes from residents.
Fire Chief Robert Burdette expressed enthusiasm for the improved facilities, highlighting the benefits for firefighter health and safety.
As the community looks forward to these developments, the commitment to fire safety and prevention remains a top priority for both the city and township fire departments.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about upcoming events and initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety. |
