Grand Blanc Township at Heart of National America250 Food Delivery Initiative

Grand Blanc Township was honored as one of just five launch locations for a massive national food donation campaign.

A semi-truck carrying 40,000 pounds of food arrived on November 19, part of the America250 initiative by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The program commemorates the nation's 250th anniversary by sending 250 truckloads to communities across all 50 states.

Church leaders said Grand Blanc was chosen as a direct response to the community's recent outpouring of compassion following a local tragedy.

The donation of canned goods, pasta, and other essentials was delivered to FISH of Grand Blanc.

The local organization will distribute the supplies to area families facing food insecurity, providing a powerful sign of support and recognition for a community that came together in a time of need.

Community Rallies Behind Grand Blanc Fire Chief in Staffing Controversy

A firestorm of controversy has erupted in Grand Blanc Township after Fire Chief Jamie Jent was placed on administrative leave.

The decision came shortly after Jent publicly voiced serious concerns about what he called unsafe staffing levels in the fire department.

Dozens of residents and firefighters packed a recent township board meeting to defend the chief and demand answers from officials.

This dispute follows a tragic shooting and fire that stretched local emergency services thin, after which Jent increased staffing per station.

The core of the issue is a fundamental disagreement over safety protocols, union involvement, and funding.

Grand Blanc Professional Firefighters Local 4962 issued a statement supporting Jent, emphasizing the debate is about protecting both residents and first responders.

Township Supervisor Scott Bennett confirmed a future discussion on the department's operations will be held, while a deputy chief serves in an interim capacity.

Grand Blanc Fire Department Hosts 'Charge into Safety' Open House

The Grand Blanc City Fire Department welcomed families to its annual open house, capping Fire Prevention Week with the theme “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”

Lt./Fire Marshal Christopher Cates shared safety tips and materials, stressing the need to handle and store lithium-ion batteries properly to reduce fire hazards.

Attendees could sign up for free smoke alarm installations, promoting safer homes across the area.

Cates, a certified car seat technician, also educated parents on car seat installation and provided emergency replacements when needed.

Families enjoyed snacks, games, and hands-on activities, such as trying on firefighter gear and receiving coloring books and kiddie helmets—exciting treats for young residents like Addie Jones.

The Grand Blanc Township Fire Department postponed its open house to coincide with the spring opening of a new Dort Highway fire station, part of a $24 million improvement project led by Scott Bennett and Robert Burdette. The project will boost emergency response—all with no tax increase.

Fire safety and community outreach remain top priorities as these new resources take shape.

Inclusive Halloween Party Promises Fun for Everyone

This October, the University of Michigan-Flint is hosting its fifth annual Inclusive Halloween Party on October 24, 2025, at the Riverfront Conference Center, creating a safe and welcoming space for children and adults of all abilities to celebrate together.

Started by Laura Martin in 2019, the event was inspired by her son Luke and aims to make Halloween fun and accessible for those with disabilities, as well as neurotypical families.

Inclusive activities include therapy dogs, sensory-friendly trick-or-treating rooms, candy alternatives, free food, a calm sensory space, and a silent dance party.

Costume closets, adaptive games, and a resource fair further ensure all guests feel supported and accepted.

Last year, over 1,200 people and 300 volunteers attended, reflecting strong community spirit and ongoing local support.

UM-Flint’s event continues to champion inclusion and representation, making Halloween a joyous, judgment-free occasion for every family.
